After 10 years on the island of St Croix, I’ve come to a conclusion. We love to play dress up. Really, we’ll look for any excuse – theme parties pop up all the time. Maybe its that there are a finite number of places to go out and you see a lot of the same people after awhile – so disguises help to achieve some variety. Maybe it’s that people that escape the mainland and choose island life tend to be more free-spirited and creative. Whatever it is, it’s sure entertaining!
With all of the holidays and parties that inspire costumes, there’s of course none like Halloween. And with Crucians happy for any excuse to throw a party and dress up – Halloween never disappoints. The variety and creativity of costumes always inspires me with individuals, couples and groups dressed to impress. With beautiful weather and plenty of parties, this weekend didn’t disappoint!
For me it started out on Thursday with the “Howl-o-ween Yappy Hour” a client appreciation event at Sugar Mill Veterinary Center‘s Soldier’s Park. This is a really fun quarterly event for clients of SMVC where well-mannered pups get to frolic in the park and get a few treats while their people enjoy a little wine, cheese and socializing.
Friday night, the town of Christiansted was in full swing. For families lucky enough to live in (or be invited by a resident) there was good old fashioned trick-or-treating at the suburban-esque Hovensa private neighborhoods. AZ Academy hosted their annual Fall Festival. Teachers, students and volunteers create and run the games in what is one of the school’s biggest fundraisers of the year. We heard this year was the best attended yet!
For the Adults there was bar-hopping downtown starting at Club 54’s Re-Grand Opening and Halloween Party featured DJ Bootz. The Comanche Mill Yachtless Club on the Boardwalk had Dick’s Garage Band with Kiki & the Flaming Gypsies lighting up the night. But the biggest bash that night was The Fort Christian Brew Pub’s annual Halloween Bash featuring Kurt Schindler on the Heineken Party Boat stage.
Saturday was the highlight of the weekend with VICARE’s Annual Halloween Party at The Palms at Pelican Cove. VICARE educates the St. Croix community about the prevention of HIV infection and supports and cares for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. This is one of my favorite parties and this year it also benefitted the Boys & Girls Club of St Croix. I was really impressed this year with the decorations and the overall event – though it wasn’t as packed as in years past (for me that wasn’t a bad thing – there was room to move) it was still very well attended. Costumes ranged from the expected storybook characters, celebrities, Alice in Wonderland (ala Johnny Depp) and homages to True Blood, to some pretty creative plays on words and concepts like the “Zom-Bees” and the St Croix Racing Hermit Crab (one of my personal favorites). The costume contest ran a bit long, but the Emcee was really entertaining, it was quite a show. A great time was had by all and funds were raised for two important non-profits in our community.
Now with Halloween under our belts – its time to start working on costumes for the next big St Croix dress-up party – The St Croix St Patrick’s Parade Day! Saturday March 17, 2012 – Get Your Green on! For the skinny on St Croix Events, check out our Events Calendar
